Three American squads with command and attached flamethrower team ascend the bluff off the Omaha beach and pushed South, inland, straight into the bocage. Facing them were small pockets of good quality German infantry, dug in with a couple of LMG positions and a fortified house. The Americans had to get 15 elemnts off the other board edge off two of the dirt roads. Extra honours would be bestowed if they took the house. The Germans had to stop them.
American orders can be viewed here.
I played hidden movement and deployment. It was only on Game Turn 3 of 7 game turns that figures appeared and were shot at. The players seemed happy with the delay as it built the suspense. This was hard to do because I wanted to preserve the card initiative order and was employing random events.
Squads 2&3 with command and support elements moved through a bocage hedge and into the central field, later to be known as 'The Field of Despair', to push through the centre, while Squad 1 headed for the bocage field to the East that had the house at the other end.
There was much debate about the right deployment of squad 2 and the correct side of the bocage to run down. Early reconnaisance on the far Western edge of the hedge had persuaded a german fire team to open up on them, and on that evidence and leaving behind a boot and some pride they elected to take the West side of the field that already had Squad 3 heading down on the East side. There was to be a reckoning in that field, but first let me take you back to Squad 1.
